Join the Leon County Public Library in June and July for Adventure Begins at Your Library summer programs for all ages! Discover a summer filled with exciting games, crafts, scavenger hunts, animal visits, reading challenges, and more.
The library’s summer reading program is designed to help prevent the “summer slide” by keeping children and teens engaged in reading over the long summer break. The program encourages citizens of all ages to read books of their choice for fun and prizes.

From June 1 through July 31, participate in the Summer Reading Challenge for a chance to win prizes sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Winners will be notified on August 10.

Learn a new language this summer with Mango Languages! With your library card, you can access step-by-step lesson plans for more than 70 different languages. This user-friendly platform is your ticket to exploring new languages at your own pace. Often overlooked for its contribution to film history, Florida has played a key role in creating the modern entertainment industry. Presented by Dr. David Morton, come discuss how Florida became a “third coast” to the American film and television industries over the past 100 years. Starting with the first film pioneers in Jacksonville during the 1900s and 1910s to South Florida’s television boom during the 2000s and 2010s, Florida has inspired countless exciting stories captured by the camera.

Collagraphy is a printmaking process in which materials are glued or sealed to a rigid substrate (such as cardboard or wood) to create a plate. Once inked, the plate becomes a tool for imprinting the design onto paper. This technique embraces texture, layering, and experimentation, making it the perfect medium for both beginners and seasoned artists.

Learn about the Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail, a collection of 20 shipwrecks of historic significance, from tugboats to WWII wrecks and more! Amy Socha, Senior Archaeologist with the Bureau of Archaeological Research (BAR) in the Florida Division of Historical Resources Underwater Archaeology Program, will discuss this mix of artificial reefs and natural wrecks in the waters of the Florida Panhandle. Each location along the trail was selected by the Division of Historical Resources to create opportunities for locals and visitors to gain appreciation for Florida’s maritime history.

Study major events in Florida history, and there’s a good chance a hurricane was involved. Presented by Eliot Kleinberg, learn how these amazing but devastating weather machines work and how they have affected Florida, with a special focus on the great 1928 storm, the subject of Eliot’s award-winning book Black Cloud: The Deadly Hurricane of 1928.
About the Presenter
Eliot Kleinberg spent more than four decades as a reporter, including more than 33 years at The Palm Beach Post. In addition to covering local news, he wrote extensively about Florida and its history. He produced two history columns and more than a dozen books about the state. He also runs a blog on bad writing and how to fix it called Something Went Horribly Wrong.
