Physical Well-Being

Physical Well-Being is about having good health and enough energy to get things done on a daily basis. It is about having a vitality and zest for life based on the little things you do on a daily basis to create a high quality lifestyle.

In their book "Well-Being, Tom Rath and Jim Harter state that "people with thriving Well-Being effectively manage their health. They exercise regularly and feel better throughout the day as a result. They make good dietary choices, which keeps their energy high throughout the day and sharpens their thinking. They get enough sleep to wake up feeling well-rested and to process what they learned the day before—and to get a good start on the next day. People with thriving Well-Being will look better, feel better and live longer."

Through the Live Well Leon Well-Being Program, Leon County offers their employees a wellness program to develop and enhance their Physical Well-Being. Some of the activities offered through the Live Well Leon program include:

Career Well-Being

Career Well-Being is about how you occupy your time and simply liking what you do every day. Career Well-Being is the most essential of the five elements of Well-Being because people with high Career Well-Being are more than twice as likely to be thriving in their lives overall. People who thrive in all five areas of Well-Being create 50% less in healthcare costs than people who don't. In fact, a 1958 study by George Gallup found that Career Well-Being is one of the major differentiators that helps us live well into our 90s.

People thriving in Career Well-Being have a deep purpose in life and a plan to attain their goals. They have more time to enjoy life, have better relationships, and don't take things for granted. Therefore, you can see how important it is for an employer to promote Career-Well-Being by having elements in place to help you grow, develop, find purpose in your work and create a safe, fun, nurturing environment to work.

Social Well-Being

Scientists are discovering how relationships shape our expectations, desires and goals. They now know that having direct and frequent social contacts with someone who has high Well-Being dramatically boosts our chances of being happy. In fact, the Well-Being of friends and relatives is a more effective predictor of happiness than earning more money. Research also shows that our social connections influence our habits, behaviors and health.

One of the reasons worksite wellness programs can be so positive is because we now know that our diets and exercise habits mimic those of our friends, and that combining social interaction with physical activity has a compounding effect on our Well-Being. Surprisingly, research shows that idle chit-chat in the workplace might actually be valuable to productivity and that even small increases in social cohesiveness lead to large gains in production.

People with thriving Social Well-Being have great relationships, which gives them positive energy daily.
