Leon County Transfer Station

The Transfer Station is the place where garbage trucks bring the household waste collected from the residents and businesses of Leon County. The garbage is emptied onto the tipping floor, then loaded into long tractor trailers and transported to the regional landfill.

Instead of building another household waste landfill in Leon County, the County Commission decided to build a Transfer Station and haul household waste to a regional landfill located in Jackson County.

The landfill is just one function of the Leon County Solid Waste Management Facility. The facility still accepts tires, clean yard waste (no plastic bagged yard waste), wood debris, electronics, recycling and household hazardous waste. Residents living in unincorporated Leon County can bring their household garbage to the Drop-Off Center at the facility as well.

The Transfer Station is located on 20 acres of land near the intersection of Capital Circle SW and Gum Road. The property has four buildings; a scale house, an office building, a maintenance building, and the Transfer Station itself. The main building is 26,700 square feet, fully enclosed, and has a 40-ft. high ceiling.

The garbage is unloaded, inspected, separated (certain items only) and then loaded into the bed of the tractor trailer, in approximately 30-45 minutes.

The tractor-trailers drive approximately 85 miles west of Tallahassee, to the Springhill Regional Landfill in Cambelton, Fl. The round trip takes approximately 3.5 hours.

An average of 170+ garbage trucks unload, and 40+ tractor-trailers are loaded at the Transfer Station each day.

The transfer station is only for commercial and governmental haulers, such as WastePro, Inc., the City of Tallahassee or Florida State University. However, permits may be issued for those businesses that need to dump more than the usual amount of household waste on a regular basis. Those with inquiries about Transfer Station permits should contact the Transfer Station Office at 606-1840. Residents who live in unincorporated Leon County can take their garbage to the drop off area at the Solid Waste Management Facility on Apalachee Parkway, or to any of the Rural Waste Service Centers.
