Haunted Household Hazardous Waste Strikes Back
Leon County holds third Household Hazardous Waste Collection event
WHO: Leon County
WHAT: Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection
WHEN: Saturday, November 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WHERE: Public Works Operations Center, 2280 Miccosukee Road
Leon County residents are encouraged to dispose of haunted household hazardous waste on Saturday, November 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Public Works Operations Center, located at the corner of Blair Stone Road and Miccosukee Road. Disposing of hazardous waste through traditional means, such as curbside pick-up, can lead to chemicals and pollutants infiltrating the soil and ground water, causing environmental harm.
Leon County Solid Waste Management Division is dedicated to decreasing the amount of toxic waste in landfills through its monthly Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection events. Citizen superheroes may bring up to 100 pounds of hazardous waste per vehicle, in addition to electronics. Accepted items include:
- Household items such as aerosols, nail polish and remover, hair color, spot remover and fluorescent bulbs (limit of 25 fluorescent tubes per vehicle);
- Cleaners such as oven and drain cleaners, floor-care products, ammonia, metal and furniture polish, bleach or rust remover;
- Garage items such as motor oil, gasoline, fuel oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid, paint, stains and mercury thermometers;
- Batteries of all types including alkaline, rechargeable, watch and car batteries;
- Electronics such as phones, printers and ink cartridges, computers, fax machines, CDs, VHS tapes, cassettes and televisions (only one large-screen television per vehicle).
For a full list of accepted items, please visit: www.LeonCountyFL.gov/HHW.
Propane tanks must weigh less than 40 pounds and tire drop-offs are limited to one per participant. Items that cannot be accepted include:
- Medical items such as sharps, medicines and radioactive waste
- Bulky items such as appliances (refrigerators, stoves/ovens, washing machines, dryers, etc.), furniture, yard waste, construction and demolition debris, household garbage or Styrofoam.
Due to limited space, loads over 100 pounds will be directed to the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center, 7550 Apalachee Parkway. Neighborhood groups or other large groups are discouraged from combining large amounts of items into a single vehicle due to safety concerns regarding transporting large amounts of unsecured hazardous materials.
Businesses and other agencies must call (850) 606-1816 to make an appointment, Monday through Friday, to drop off their items at the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center. Some fees will apply.
Additionally, citizens may visit the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center during normal business hours – Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
For more information, call the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center at (850) 606-1803 or visit www.LeonCountyFL.gov/HHW for the complete collection schedule and safe packing guide.
