Message from Library Director Pamela Monroe

Why do we adore September? Because it's Library Card Sign-Up Month. If you've got a card, congrats! You're part of an awesome community with access to endless treasures. Do you know what your card can do for you? Let's find out:

  • Dive into a world of books, e-books, audiobooks, music, and even unique items available through our Library of Things, like rakes and Chromebooks. 
  • Need a space for your next meeting? Easily book a room at your local branch online.
  • Prepping for the SAT or ACT? Get ahead with Learning Express practice tests.
  • Enjoy the New York Times with your cozy morning (or afternoon) brew.
  • Jam out or binge-watch with Hoopla, your gateway to music, e-books, audiobooks, and TV series.

Join us during Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) as we celebrate the achievements and rich contributions of Hispanic Americans to our shared history, culture, and society. We invite you to explore these impactful narratives and celebrate their legacies through our upcoming events and diverse library resources.

On Saturday, September 16, from 12-2 p.m., the library is kicking off our celebration at the Main Library during the "Cultura Tallahassee: Together We Shine" exhibit opening, which will showcase local artists' vibrant expressions of Hispanic heritage. During the event, Ben Lougheed will captivate with a live Spanish guitar performance. Light refreshments will be provided.

Citizens seeking a fast and secure laptop solution can now check out Chromebooks at all library locations for a six-week period. Those interested must be at least 16 years old, have a library card or mobile app barcode, and present a photo ID with no overdue fines or fees. Chromebook/hotspot bundles are also available. Reserve yours today!

Celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month in September! Now's the perfect time to get a replacement card or encourage someone you know to sign up for their first card. With a library card, you can access a treasure trove of e-books, movies, music, and resources in person and online. Now through September 30, you can even receive a free replacement card. Register today and immerse yourself in all the library has to offer!

Homework Hub returns on Monday, September 11! Kindergarten through 8th grade students can receive free assistance with homework in person at the Leon County Main Library and Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library, as well as online through Zoom. Visit our website to register.

If you’re a fan of the library’s e-book and audiobook collections, we encourage you to dive a little deeper and check out our digital magazine platform, Flipster! With your library card, you have access to popular magazines like People, Time, and Sports Illustrated. You can also flip through Essence, ScienceNews, Bloomsberg Businessweek, and many other titles for a variety of interests and hobbies. The Flipster app is available for Android and Apple devices. You can also access it through the library’s app as well as on a desktop computer.

Enjoy engaging virtual Author Talks with bestselling authors from a wide range of fiction and nonfiction genres. Tune in for these live events with interactive Q&As, or watch the recording afterward. 

Upcoming virtual Author Talks include:

  • Thursday, September 7, at 7 p.m.: Author Talk with Lidia Bastianich, award-winning television host and bestselling author of My American Dream: A Life of Love, Family, and Food.
  • Wednesday, September 20, at 2 p.m.: Author Talk with Adam AlterNew York Times bestselling author of Anatomy of a Breakthrough: How to Get Unstuck When It Matters Most.
