Celebrate Black History Month with us! Throughout the month of February, the Library is offering several programs and events, including movie screenings, story times, and more.

Black History Month Double Feature

We're dimming the lights for a movie double feature on Saturday, February 11, beginning at 11 a.m. at the downtown Main Library.

See the BAFTA Award-winning documentary I Am Not Your Negro (Rated PG-13) at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Academy Award-winning film Moonlight (Rated R), directed by FSU film school alum Barry Jenkins, starting at 1:30 p.m. 

African American Read-In

Bring the entire family to the 2023 Leon County African American Read-In featuring children's books by African American authors on Saturday, February 25 at 1 p.m. at the downtown Main Library. Audience members will be invited to read from a selection of books provided by the library. Featured speakers include Wanda Hunter, Dr. Kendra Mitchell, Dougla-Khan Stancil, Joseph Ward, and Regina Browning.

It's time to dust off those shovels and gear up for planting season!

The Spring Seed Library will kick off on Saturday, February 18, with vegetable and fruit seeds available for checkout at all library locations.

All you need is your library card, and you are eligible to check out five seed packets per month, or three packets without a library card. Now is the perfect time to apply for a free library card or check the status of your card!

The Main Library location is hosting the 2023 Spring Seed Library Kickoff on Saturday, February 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be demonstrations and activities with UF/IFAS Leon County Extension and the Leon County Office of Resource Stewardship.

Learn how to use telescopes to navigate the night sky with the Tallahassee Astronomical Society on Friday, February 17 from 8-9 p.m. at the Woodville Branch Library. It is recommended that attendees check the weather and dress accordingly as this event will be held outside.

Enjoy engaging virtual Author Talks with bestselling authors from a wide range of fiction and non-fiction genres. Tune in for these live events with interactive Q&As, or watch the recording afterwards.

• Thursday, February 9 at 7 p.m.: Author Talk with Lana Harper, New York Times bestselling author of Payback’s a Witch and From Bad to Cursed.
• Thursday, February 16 at 1 p.m.: Author Talk with Grace M. Cho, author of Tastes Like War: A Memoir, a 2021 National Book Award Finalist and TIME and NPR Best Book of the Year.
• Tuesday, February 28 at 4 p.m.: Author Talk with Sadeqa Johnson, recipient of the National Book Club Award, the Phillis Wheatley Book Award, and the USA Best Book Award for Best Fiction.
• Monday, March 13 at 1 p.m.: Author Talk with David Epstein, New York Times bestselling author of Range and The Sports Gene.
