Meridian Road Safety

Earlier this year I requested safety measures be examined for Meridian Road after a tragic accident that took the lives of two high school students. After a thorough research and analysis, the Board of County Commissioners were presented with options to improve the safety and visibility of a dangerous curve on Meridian Road just south of the Summerbrooke neighborhood entrance. These improvements passed unanimously and have begun to be implemented. Although we are taking steps to improve safety along this stretch of road, nothing is as preventative as using caution. Please slow down and take heed of the speed limits along our canopy roads. They are beautiful but they can also be dangerous, especially at night.

Proctor Road Improvements

Alongside safety improvements to Meridian Road, I requested that improvements to Proctor Road be examined in response to numerous rainfall events that had highlighted the additional need for resources along the dirt stretch of the road. At the June Board of County Commissioners meeting, new policies and practices were passed unanimously to ensure a quick and efficient response to any degradation that may occur due to inclement weather, which can cause dangerous driving conditions. New permanent sediment supplies will be placed along the road and on call staff will be staged and prepared in the event of predicted rainfall events.

Northeast Gateway

At a special meeting of Blueprint this past month, the much needed Northeast Gateway project's PD&E was approved by the Blueprint IA Board, made up of both the City and County Commissioners and the Mayor. This project includes the expansion of Welaunee Boulevard and will provide relief to Miccosukee and Centerville Roads, a second exit to the Leon County Schools complex which includes Montford Middle School and Roberts Elementary School, as well as a future entrance for the desperately needed Northeast Park. The approval of the PD&E will now be followed by the design stage where public input will continue to be sought in order to create a product that benefits everyone.

Bannerman Widening Project

The Bannerman Road widening project is underway and is currently in the design and community input phase. This will extend through Summer 2021, when final design, engineering, right-of-way acquisition and permitting will begin. The project is split up into 3 segments, each with differing improvements planned:

  • Segment 1: North Meridian Road to Preservation Road (Construct a median and turn lanes to support two-lane roadway with multimodal and stormwater improvements.)
  • Segment 2: Preservation Road to Tekesta Drive (Widen to four-lanes with multimodal and stormwater improvements.)
  • Segment 3: Tekesta Drive to Thomasville Road (Widen to four-lanes with multimodal and stormwater improvements.)

Market District Placemaking

The Market District Park aspect of the Market District Placemaking project is currently in the final design phase after going through rigorous public input. Above is the concept plan for the park passed at the last Blueprint meeting which includes pickleball courts, a large open greenspace, walking trails, waterplay area, and shaded plaza area. Following the finalization of the design, contract bidding will begin prior to the groundbreaking and construction of the park.

Hey Northeast Neighbors,

Here is what we have been working on the past few months.
For weekly updates, follow our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Memorial Day

This Memorial Day, I had the pleasure of joining my family at the Greenwood Cemetery and at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cemetery to place flags and honor our American heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. There is no higher calling of service to your family, neighbors, community and country than risking your life for your country. Thank you to Rep Al Lawson Jr., the 100 Black Men of Tallahassee and the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club Tallahassee, FL for their work to make the day happen.

Florida Hurricane Sales Tax Holiday

Hurricane season begins today, and the Florida hurricane season sales tax holiday began Monday May 28th and runs through Sunday June 6th. This is the time to stock up and work on your emergency plans in the event of a hurricane. To help you prepare, you can follow the Leon County Disaster Survival Guide found at https://leoncountyfl.gov/haveahurricaneplan/.

Find more information on what items the sales tax holiday applies to at https://floridarevenue.com/.../FAQexternalConsumers.pdf

Leon County Family Day

I am extremely proud to sponsor Leon County's official designation of the Friday after Thanksgiving as "Family Day". This is an acknowledgement of the importance of family in creating the foundation for an individual's success. All families, of all kinds, are vital to supporting a community's prosperity. Whether shopping, going to a movie or exploring a local park, I hope that we make an intentional effort on the day after Thanksgiving to spend time with the ones we love.

Hey Northeast Neighbors,

Here are the newest updates for Northeast Tallahassee and District 4.

Northeast Park Updates

The past few months I've been focused on getting the much needed Northeast Park moving, and this is what has happened so far:

  • At the January Board Retreat, I received unanimous support to raise the issue of relocating and accelerating funding for the NE Park to the level of a Strategic Initiative.
  • During the following January Board of County Commissioners meeting, I motioned with unanimous support to authorize the County Administrator to begin the process of selling the original Proctor Road location to purchase a new location on the Welaunee property, immediately south of Montford Middle and Roberts Elementary schools.
    • This new location will serve over 22,000 more residents in a 5 mile radius.
  • In February, the Blueprint Board met and passed an item initiating the amendment process for the Northeast Park project.
    • This will see an item come back before the Board at the April meeting to approve the new location for the park, as well an update through the budget workshop process to accelerate funding and move the project from 2035 to the current 5 year funding round.

Welaunee Blvd Extension Updates

(NE Gateway Project)

The Project Development and Environment Study (PD&E) is currently underway for the NE Gateway project, and is currently in the Preliminary Concept Development phase. The next project update will come before the Blueprint IA Board at the April 8th, 2021 meeting. At this meeting, the intersection design for the Welaunee Blvd, Bradfordville Rd, Centerville Rd, and Roberts Rd intersection will be discussed by the Blueprint Board, with a Public Hearing at 5:30 PM.

Saving the Lake Hall School House

A hidden gem of history in NE Leon County is on the way to being preserved thanks to a group led by the Friends of Lake Hall School. This school house, built during the reconstruction era and in use until the 1950s, sits just off of Old Thomasville Rd, tucked back on private property. This group, with help from the Trust for Public Lands, is hoping to save the school house and preserve it as inspirational piece of NE Leon County's storied history, with possible uses including an educational center, an outdoor classroom, and even a wedding, reception, or small party venue. I was approached by this group for help as the building sits across two property lines in unincorporated Leon County. They are asking the for the County to investigate redrawing the property lines so that it may be preserved where it sits and on a single property. I am happy to be working with County staff in order to move this process in the right direction and have hope that we will be able to preserve this beautiful piece of history.
