Honoring Women’s History Month with Library Events and Resources


In celebration of Women’s History Month, Leon County Government is honoring the achievements and contributions of women throughout history with events, activities, and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System. Thematic book lists and movie watchlists offer citizens of all ages the chance to explore the inspiring women who have helped shape our community and the world.

In addition to these in-person and digital resources, citizens are encouraged to attend the County’s upcoming Women’s History Month events:

  • Virtual Author Talk: The Movement by Clara Bingham, Thursday, March 20, from 2-3 p.m., virtual – Join award-winning journalist and author Clara Bingham for a conversation about her engaging oral history, The Movement: How Women’s Liberation Transformed America, 1963-1973, which explores the decade that defined the feminist movement.
  • More Than Orange Blossoms: Feisty, Fabulous Females of Florida with Carrie Sue Ayvar, Saturday, March 22, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m., Eastside Branch Library – This presentation by internationally celebrated storyteller and Chautauqua scholar Carrie Sue Ayvar highlights inspiring stories of courageous women who shaped Florida and the nation, including Julia Tuttle, the "Mother of Miami," and Mary McLeod Bethune, renowned educator and an advisor to U.S. presidents.
  • Zora Neale Hurston: The Founding Mother of American Musicology with Dr. Panayotis League, Tuesday, March 25, from 6-7:30 p.m., Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library – This presentation by Dr. Panayotis League explores the life and legacy of author and folklorist Zora Neale Hurston, focusing on her ethnographic masterpiece Mules and Men and her pioneering fieldwork with African American musicians, storytellers, and craftspeople in Eatonville, Florida.
  • Women in Florida History Scavenger Hunt, throughout the month at all locations – Explore the lives of women who shaped Florida with this self-directed scavenger hunt for youth, available at all library locations in March. Learn about influential women in our state and earn a small prize upon completion. Visit the library’s Information Desk to get started.
