County Celebrates 10 Years of Growth During Spring Seed Library Kickoff

WHO:  Leon County Government
WHAT:  Spring Seed Library Kickoff
WHEN:  Saturday, February 8, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
WHERE:  Leon County Main Library, 200 West Park Avenue

Leon County Government is celebrating a decade of growth during the Spring Seed Library kickoff on Saturday, February 8, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the downtown Leon County Main Library, 200 West Park Avenue. During the last 10 years, the Seed Library Program has provided more than 1.3 million fruit, vegetable, and herb seeds to residents to encourage healthy eating habits and sustainable gardening.

Hosted in partnership with the UF/IFAS Leon County Extension, this year’s Spring Seed Library kickoff event promises fun for all ages. Attendees can enjoy hands-on seeding demonstrations, learn about vegetable gardening techniques and sustainable practices, and stop by the Ask-a-Master-Gardener booth for expert advice. Staff from the Leon County Office of Sustainability and UF/IFAS Leon County Extension will also be on hand to answer all your gardening questions.

The 11 seed varieties offered through the Spring Seed Library will be available at all Leon County Public Library locations starting Saturday, February 8, at 10 a.m. Citizens can check out up to five seed packets per month using their library card, or three packets per month without a library card, while supplies last. Residents can register for or check the status of a library card at LeonCountyLibrary.org/LibraryCard.

The 2025 spring seed varieties include:
  • California Blackeye Pea
  • Carbon Tomato
  • Cocozelle Zucchini
  • Country Gentleman Sweet Corn
  • Lemon Cucumber
  • Moon and Stars Watermelon
  • Provider Bush Bean
  • Red Malabar Spinach
  • San Marzano Tomato
  • Thai Basil
  • Yolo Wonder L Sweet Pepper
The Leon County Seed Library Program has flourished since its inception in 2015 and has offered residents access to 135 unique seasonal seed varieties at the Leon County Public Library. With nearly 130,000 seed checkouts so far, the program has empowered residents to grow their own gardens and embrace sustainable gardening practices.
