Leon County and the American Legion will honor our hometown heroes during the annual Operation Thank You Veterans Day breakfast. Breakfast will be served from 6:30 to 9 a.m. The program begins at 8 a.m., when the County will present two proclamations honoring Colonel Charles G. “Chuck” Mohr, U.S. Army veteran who completed 37 years of service, and Colonel Augustus D. Aikens, Jr., U.S. Army veteran who completed 30 years of service and earned the Bronze Star Medal during Operation Desert Storm and the Legion of Merit Medal.

Judge Augustus D. Aikens, Jr. Retirement Celebration and Courthouse Dedication

You're invited to the retirement celebration and courthouse dedication ceremony of the Leon County Courthouse in honor of Judge Augustus D. Aikens, Jr. The retirement celebration will take place on Friday, November 22, starting at 1:30 p.m. in Courtroom 2E in the Leon County Courthouse. Following the retirement celebration, the dedication ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. on the Courthouse front lawn where the name will be unveiled. During the dedication ceremony, the Leon County Courthouse will be renamed the Judge Augustus D. Aikens, Jr. Leon County Courthouse.

The longest-serving Leon County Judge, Judge Aikens has played a significant role in shaping the local judiciary, including over a decade as Administrative County Judge. During his tenure as a Leon County Judge, he established the Leon County Veterans Treatment Court in 2015, a program that provides critical support to veterans and service members facing mental health or substance abuse challenges. His leadership in this area is informed by his own 30-year military career, which includes earning the Bronze Star during Operation Desert Storm and retiring as a Colonel.

Leon County Adopt-A-Tree Program
 
For more than 30 years, Leon County Government has proudly supported our native ecosystem through the Adopt-A-Tree Program, which provides unincorporated County residents the opportunity to have a tree planted on their property for free. This year, the program will offer three tree varieties to choose from: Eastern Redbud, Riverbirch, and Shumard Oak.

Apalachee Heritage: Exploring Indigenous Culture and Spanish Influence

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month and the Tallahassee-Leon County Bicentennial, Leon County Government invites you to discover the rich history of the Apalachee people, an indigenous group from the Tallahassee area. Hosted in partnership with Mission San Luis, this event will explore Apalachee cultural practices and how interactions with the Spanish shaped their history.
