County Apologizes for the History of Slavery and Racism in Leon County

On February 20, 2024, the Leon County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved the adoption of a resolution acknowledging and apologizing for the history of slavery and racism in Leon County. The resolution underscores Leon County’s unwavering dedication to advancing equality and ensuring the protection of the fundamental rights of individuals regardless of race, color, religion, or national origin. Recognized as a county of the State of Florida and part of the Florida Panhandle, Leon County is equally culpable for its role in the practice of slavery and unjust treatment of African Americans. Leon County is committed to recognizing the misdeeds suffered by African Americans during the eras of slavery and Jim Crow and to working toward eliminating racial prejudices, injustices, and discrimination from our society.
