Indigent Cremation and Burial Programs

Florida law states that all counties are charged with the final disposition of unclaimed or indigent bodies at the county's expense. The law was enacted to ensure that unclaimed or indigent bodies are properly disposed of for public health purposes. 

In Leon County, final disposition is coordinated between local funeral homes and Leon County Public Works by the Office of Human Services and Community Partnerships. Unclaimed or indigent bodies are cremated or buried at the Leon County Serenity Cemetery.

Eligibility

• Eligibility is based on federal poverty guidelines.
• Insurance, income, and assets will be reviewed to determine eligibility.
• Leon County does not supplement funeral expenses.
