Tropical Storm Debby Community Brief


For Sunday, August 4

Leon County continues to closely monitor and prepare for Tropical Storm Debby.

In close coordination with the National Weather Service, Leon County wants every County citizen to know the latest, most accurate weather forecast as the storm continues to develop and strengthen. See below for an overview:

  • Leon County remains under a Tropical Storm Warning, Flood Watch, and Tornado Watch from the National Weather Service.
  • Leon County may receive up to 10 inches of rain, leading to localized flash flooding.
  • Tropical Storm Debby continues to gain strength and become better organized as it heads through the Eastern Gulf of Mexico.
  • System is currently located about 160 miles from the Big Bend.
  • Tropical storm force winds are likely to arrive very early Monday morning with landfall of Debby likely to arrive sometime Monday morning.


The following includes a list of resources for disaster planning in Florida:

  • FloridaDisaster.org contains a summary of currently open general and special needs shelters within the State of Florida.
  • The Visit Florida website contains current travel safety information as well as resources for hotel and lodging availability across the state of Florida.
  • The American Red Cross shelter directory contains a list of currently open American Red Cross shelters across the country.


The County has closed all public-facing offices on Monday, August 5 to reassign staff to storm response and recovery efforts.

Leon County Office Closures for Monday, August 5:

  • Leon County offices
  • Leon County community centers
  • Leon County campgrounds
  • Leon County libraries
  • Leon County Animal Control
  • Leon County Solid Waste Management Facility and Household Hazardous Waste Center

Additional Service Information
Residential waste collection routes will be delayed one day for citizens whose normal pick-up day is during the holiday. Waste Pro’s holiday schedule can be found at WasteProUSA.com. For more information, call the Leon County Solid Waste Management Division at 850-606-1800.

In the event of an animal-related emergency, service is available by calling the Consolidated Dispatch Agency at 850-606-5800. Leon County Animal Control encourages residents to only use this service to report dangerous or aggressive dogs, sick or injured domestic animals and animal cruelty. Injured wildlife calls will be forwarded to the St. Francis Wildlife Association at 850-627-4151.

Important Updates
Sandbag Sites
Sandbags sites will remain open to the public until today, August 4, at 7 p.m. Here's a list of the following Leon County locations:

  • Leon County Northeast Branch Library, 5313 Thomasville Road
  • Apalachee Regional Park (Solid Waste Management Facility), 7550 Apalachee Parkway
  • Fred George Park, 3403 Capital Circle NW
  • At the intersection of Oak Ridge Road at Ranchero Road
  • Fort Braden Community Park, 15000 Blountstown Highway

Leon County will staff these sites to assist residents in quickly filling sandbags. Sand, bags and ties are available for public use. Residents are asked to take no more than 15 bags so as to allow others to prepare.


Shelters
Leon County Government, in coordination with Leon County Schools, has opened six emergency shelters for the public in preparation for storm-related impacts. The locations below will be available:
  • Fort Braden School,15100 Blountstown Hwy
  • Chiles High School, 7200 Lawton Chiles Lane (pet-accessible)
  • Rickards High School, 3013 Jim Lee Rd.
  • Lincoln High School, 3838 Trojan Trail
  • Fairview Middle School, 3415 Zillah St.
  • SAIL High School, 2006 Jackson Bluff Rd.

Office, School, and University/College Closures
  • Leon County has closed all public-facing offices on Monday, August 5, to reassign staff to storm response and recovery efforts.
  • City of Tallahassee Administrative Offices will be closed on Monday, August 5. All City staff has been refocused to storm response duties.
  • The Tallahassee International Airport will close at midnight on Monday, August 5, and reopen at 12 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, pending it is safe to do so.
  • The FEMA Disaster Recovery Center, located at the Leon County Main Library at 200 W. Park Avenue, will be closed Monday, August 5.
  • Florida A&M University (FAMU) Tallahassee campus will be closed from 12 p.m. on Sunday, August 4 through Monday, August 5, as Debby makes its way toward Florida. The Viticulture Center and the Quincy Farm will also be closed.
  • Florida State University’s Tallahassee campus will close on Monday, August 5, due to Debby that will begin affecting the area Sunday night.
  • Florida State University Schools (FSUS) and The Marine Lab at Turkey Point will also be closed Monday, August 5.
  • Leon County Schools will be closed on Monday, August 5.
  • Tallahassee State College will close all campuses on Monday, August 5.

Be the first to know about shelter locations, road closures and service changes by downloading the application from the Apple and Google Play stores. 
  • Visit the Leon County Emergency Information Portal - Hosting the same information as the Citizens Connect app, the Emergency Information Portal can be accessed on a desktop or a mobile browser by visiting LeonCountyFL.gov/ei.
  • Listen to 88.9 WFSU-FM - Citizens can tune in to 88.9 FM for the most up-to-date information from local public safety officials. Featuring up-to-the-minute reporting, WFSU, Leon County and the City of Tallahassee remain committed to getting information out on the radio as soon as possible. 
  • Additionally, iHeartRadio will also provide updates on the following stations: WFLA-FM 100.7, WFLF-FM 94.5, WTNT 94.9, KISS-FM 107.1, X-FM101.5, and The Beat-FM 105.3. 
  • Call 2-1-1 Big Bend - If you need community information, services and support any day of the year, Big Bend 2-1-1 is reachable by dialing either 2-1-1 or (850) 617-6333.
  • Call (850) 606-3700 with questions - Leon County Emergency Management staff is available to answer questions about how you should prepare, act and recover.
