Sustainable Communities Summit Continues with Lake Carr Invasives Shoreline Cleanup

WHO:  Leon County Government
WHAT:  Lake Carr Invasives Shoreline Cleanup
WHEN:  Saturday, September 28, at 9 a.m.
WHERE:  Cedar Hill Landing, 467 Cedar Hill Rd.

As a part of the Sustainable Communities Summit Series, Leon County Government will host a community shoreline cleanup on Saturday, September 28, starting at 9 a.m. at Cedar Hill Landing at Lake Carr, 467 Cedar Hill Rd. This hands-on event focuses on the removal of invasive plant species from the lake’s shoreline and shallow waters, providing an educational experience about the impact of these species on water quality and local ecosystems. To register, visit LeonCountyFL.gov/Summit.

Preceding the cleanup, representatives from the Leon County Office of Sustainability and Public Works will provide guidance to participants on how to identify and safely remove invasive aquatic plants. The event is a unique opportunity for community members to engage in environmental stewardship and contribute to the health of Lake Carr.

Invasive species are non-native plants that lack natural competition, allowing them to dominate and disrupt natural ecosystems. This can lead to a loss of habitat, reduced biodiversity, and alterations to natural cycles. Identifying and removing these species is crucial to preserving the health of our local environment.

Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for working in muddy and wet conditions. Tools such as buckets, gloves, and shovels will be provided, along with refreshments.

Leon County puts continuous effort into the care and preservation of its water bodies and systems. As part of the County's Integrated Sustainability Action Plan, this lake cleanup is one of the ongoing litter reduction and beautification initiatives, aligning with the commitment to hosting local clean-up events and encouraging community involvement in creating a more sustainable and beautiful environment for all.
