Sunshine and Smiles: Leon County’s Fred George Park Opens to Large Crowd
Today, Leon County Government celebrated the grand opening of Fred George Park and Greenway, located at the corner of Fred George Road and Capital Circle NW. Hundreds of Leon County residents toured the newly constructed park, and strolled down the woodland trails that lead to the natural sink. For the community, it was the first day of many that they could walk, run and play in the park.
“Parks are places that bring our community together and make us healthier and happier,” said Leon County District 3 Commissioner John Dailey. “From the baseball field to the scenic greenway, to the natural history museum, Fred George Park will serve generations in northwest Leon County and beyond.”
Featuring a 160-acre greenway and 10 acres of recreational amenities, residents enjoyed newly installed sidewalks that connect park goers to nearby neighborhoods, businesses and the Leon County Lake Jackson Library and Community Center. While children played on the playground, park goers toured the new museum and education center. Fred George Park also hosts a regulation-sized baseball diamond, a concession stand with a restroom and a multi-purpose field.
“Fred George Park is an example of what we in Leon County Government can accomplish through local and state partnerships. The vision and execution of this project took planning, coordination and hard work, and today makes it all worthwhile,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long.
Leon County acquired the land for Fred George Park and Greenway through partnerships with Blueprint 2000 and Florida Communities Trust (FCT), a grant program administered by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
“The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is honored to provide local communities funding to protect natural resources and offer recreational opportunities through the Florida Communities Trust grant program,” said Gary Clark, DEP deputy secretary and chairman of the FCT. “Fred George Park and Greenway embodies the heart of the FCT program and is a shining example of what can be accomplished through partnerships.”
