Leon County Government invites residents of all ages to put their design skills to the test in the upcoming fifth annual Community Gingerbread House Competition at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System. Registration for the competition opens on Saturday, November 18, at 8 a.m., and closes on Friday, December 1, at 1 p.m.
New this year, the competition will feature five age divisions, so the whole family can compete. Judges will select one winner and honorable mention from each category and attendees will select the People’s Choice award winner and honorable mention to receive a gift card prize.
Creations must be dropped off for the competition on Saturday, December 2, between 12 and 1 p.m. at the downtown Main Library, 200 West Park Avenue.
The sweet submissions will be displayed on Saturday, December 2, from 1-3 p.m. at the downtown Main Library. During the event, the public is invited to participate in hands-on STEAM activities for youth. Competition winners will be announced during a ceremony at 2:30 p.m.
In addition to the competition, citizens are invited to attend gingerbread-themed events throughout November and December.
- No-Bake Gingerbread House Workshop, Thursday, November 30, from 4-5 p.m., Woodville Branch Library – Put your building hat on and create your very own gingerbread house. Supplies provided.
- Gingerbread-Themed Story Time, multiple dates, times, and locations – Join us for story times featuring gingerbread-themed songs, rhymes, and stories to help children develop early literacy skills.
- Gingerbread-Themed Lego Club, multiple dates, times, and locations – Children and families can have fun with Legos while learning creative thinking, motor skills, and puzzle-solving skills.
To support those in need during the holiday season, from November 25 through December 2, citizens can also donate healthy, non-perishable food at all library locations in support of ECHO, which serves people in crisis and poverty in Leon County.
