Ready, Set, Sow! County Spring Seed Library Offers 10 Seed Varieties

Join Leon County Government on Saturday, February 10, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for the Spring Seed Library kickoff at the downtown Leon County Main Library, 200 West Park Avenue. The Leon County Seed Library Program has more than 120,000 seeds available for residents to grow their own gardens this spring.
In partnership with the UF/IFAS Leon County Extension, the kickoff event will offer fun for all ages, including hands-on seeding activities, information about vegetable gardening techniques and sustainable gardening practices, and an Ask-a-Master-Gardener booth. Staff from the Leon County Office of Sustainability and UF/IFAS Leon County Extension will also be available to answer questions and address all your gardening needs.
The ten seed varieties offered through the Spring Seed Library will be available at all Leon County Public Library locations starting Saturday, February 10, at 10 a.m. Citizens can check out up to five seed packets per month using their library card, or three packets per month without a library card, while supplies last. Register for or check the status of a library card at LeonCountyLibrary.org/LibraryCard.
The 2024 spring seed varieties include:
- Ashley Cucumber
- Big Rainbow Tomato
- Big Red Ripper (Mandy) Southern Pea (Cowpea)
- Crimson Sweet Watermelon
- Genovese Compact Improved Basil
- Kentucky Wonder Pole Bean
- Rainbow Cherry Mix Tomato
- Red Burgundy Okra
- Rosa Bianca Eggplant
- Sweet Banana Pepper
Since 2015, the Leon County Seed Library Program has offered seasonal seed varieties each fall and spring to residents at the Leon County Public Library. The program encourages residents to practice sustainable gardening and grow their own healthy and nutritious foods at home. Leon County has distributed more than one million seeds to the community since the program was established.
