On Earth Day, County Hosts Shoreline Cleanup at Lake Henrietta

To celebrate Earth Day, the Leon County Government organized a community shoreline cleanup event on April 22nd at the Anita L. Davis Preserve at Lake Henrietta. Volunteers helped pick up litter and learned about the importance of stormwater facilities in Leon County.

Lake Henrietta helps manage water in connected bodies like Lake Munson. The Lake Munson drawdown exposed the banks of Lake Henrietta, making this a unique opportunity for community engagement. Volunteers learned about stormwater facilities from a presentation by the Public Works team. They also saw a newly installed sign designed by Jade-Rose Konuch, a Leon County Junior Apprentice, that explained the process in a creative way.

On Saturday, 70 volunteers gathered to clean up the shoreline and extended areas of Lake Henrietta, collecting several dumpsters full of trash. They heard about how important the County’s water bodies are for our entire ecosystem.
Â
The shoreline cleanup reminded everyone of their responsibility to protect natural resources and preserve water quality. It also provided a fun way to give back and create a stable habitat for local wildlife.
