Next County Library Lecture Focuses on Diversity in STEM Education

Join Leon County Government and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in kicking off this year's Big Read with a Library Lecture on Thursday, February 11, at 6:30 p.m. featuring a topic meant to engage and inspire. Highly regarded local scientist and educator, Dr. Adrienne Stephenson, will present a virtual, interactive and informative lecture entitled, "Changing Faces in STEM: Heartwork Grounded in Service, Science, and Scholarship."

Dr. Stephenson will lead a discussion of her personal journey as a Black woman in STEM and how her intersecting passions help to change the narrative of science education empowering young people to discover their highest potential.

 

This Library Lecture marks the first event in 2021 and also kicks off the NEA Big Read, "Lab Girl" by Hope Jahren, an award-winning autobiography about a woman's life in science and battle with mental health issues. Together, these events are a part of a series of programming that centers around diversity in STEM education.

 

Leon County selects speakers and topics that engage and inspire, appealing to the interests of all citizens. All lectures are free and open to the public. The public will be able to pick up a free personal copy of the book "Lab Girl" at all library locations starting on February 1.

NEA Big Read — Leon County is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. 

 

The LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System is one of the 84 not-for-profit organizations to receive a grant to host an NEA Big Read project between September 2020 and June 2021.
