WHO: Leon County and The Village Square
WHAT: Created Equal: A Conversation about Race, Founding Ideals, and Our Hometown
WHEN: Wednesday, January 11 at 6 p.m.
WHERE: The Moon, 1105 E. Lafayette St.
As part of the Club of Honest Citizens series, Leon County and the Village Square will host “Created Equal: A Conversation about Race, Founding Ideals, and Our Hometown” on Wednesday, January 11 at 6 p.m. at The Moon, 1105 E. Lafayette St. The event invites citizens to participate in a conversation on race-related issues in the community.
“This frank community conversation about race and racial equality will continue to explore how we as a community can confront and change racial disparities,” said Leon County Commission Chairman John E. Dailey. “This Club of Honest Citizens event is intended to be straightforward and honest, and will encourage citizens to find common ground not only on issues like race but also stereotypes and socioeconomic challenges.”
Through a partnership with the Southern Shakespeare Company, Created Equal will begin with actor and playwright Keith Hamilton Cobb performing a special 10-minute preview of his one-act play, American Moor. American Moor merges Shakespeare’s Othello with twenty-first century racial awareness and strikes at the heart of current race relations. Following the performance, attendees will discuss the state of race relations in Leon County and the opportunities that exist to bridge racial divides within the community.
“Building on the success of last year’s Created Equal event, Leon County and the Village Square continue to encourage courageous conversations on issues that matter the most to our community such as the state of race relations,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “Through our strong community partnerships, the County is able to engage citizens in meaningful conversations that help shape our community.”
Full performances of American Moor will occur on January 12 and 13 at Florida A&M University’s Lee Hall Auditorium. To purchase tickets for the full performance visit: http://southernshakespearefestival.org/keith-hamilton-cobbs-american-moor/ .
