Leon County Government invites media partners to the Leon County 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service, an annual community service day, on Thursday, September 12, at the home of a local U.S. Army veteran in the Woodville community. Media partners are asked to gather at J. Lewis Hall Sr. (Woodville) Park, 1492 J. Lewis Hall Sr. Lane, at 11:30 a.m. Formal comments and recognition will begin at 12 p.m.

More than 60 County employees, community partners, and citizen volunteers will unite in service and volunteerism in remembrance of the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the attacks on September 11, 2001. Volunteers will complete various home repair and beautification projects, including exterior home painting, landscaping, soft washing, and more.

This year's event will transform and beautify the home of Louverne Thomas, a U.S. Army and Florida Army National Guard veteran, who completed six years of service from 1983 to 1989. During her service, Ms. Thomas completed the seven-week Unit Supply Specialist Course and was awarded the Army Service Ribbon and M16 Rifle Sharpshooter Medal.

Since 2011, Leon County Government has held the 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service to honor victims, survivors, and others who rose in service in response to the attacks. Annual volunteer events are hosted nationwide on September 11 and surrounding days to give back to the community in tribute to the victims and heroes of 9/11. To find opportunities to volunteer in Leon County, visit  Volunteer.VolunteerLeon.org

Media interviews will be available during the Day of Service. For more information, contact Leon County Community and Media Relations, at (850) 606-5300 / CMR@LeonCountyFL.gov.
