Leon County Welcomes Felicia Gilyard Back Home

Leon County Welcomes Felicia Gilyard Back Home

Today, Leon County hosted a Home Replacement and Housewarming Ceremony for homeowner Felicia Gilyard, a resident of the Baum community whose home was significantly impacted by a tornado in March 2019. Through the State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP), Leon County provides funding for home repair and replacement projects. Ms. Gilyard’s home replacement assistance was given priority due to the area disaster.

"I am proud that Leon County supports safe and affordable housing for all citizens, and especially those in critical need like Ms. Gilyard," said Leon County District 5 Commissioner Kristin Dozier. "Following the Baum Community tornado, the County waived permit fees, expedited the permitting process, and prioritized those homeowners directly affected. And I think in the end, we repaired a lot more than just a home for Ms. Gilyard and her daughter."

The March tornado destroyed six homes on Steeds Run, Jefferson Road, and Driftwood Circle and damaged 15 others. Ms. Gilyard’ former mobile home sustained significant damage. Using re-prioritized SHIP funding, Leon County replaced the destroyed mobile home with a new site-built structure, and added new appliances, energy efficient windows, a central HVAC system, another bathroom and a new well system.

"While the Baum tornado fortunately did not take any lives, it certainly changed dozens forever," said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. "I couldn't be prouder of our Housing team's work here today, and also all the County first responders who answered the call for help after the tornado: Emergency Medical Services, Public Works, Emergency Management and the Leon County Sheriff's Office."

Leon County Division of Housing Services works year-round to provide and maintain safe, sanitary, and affordable housing for low to moderate-income citizens of Leon County. SHIP provides funds to local governments to preserve affordable homeownership and multifamily housing.

“I am so thankful for Leon County assisting me after the March tornado because I truly didn’t know where to turn,” said homeowner Felicia Gilyard. “Overnight I went from a roof over my head to homeless. But the County helped put things back together with this brand-new home, well water system, and more—and all done in less than five months!”
