WHO:     Leon County Government

WHAT:    9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service Ceremony

WHEN:    Monday, September 11 at 11 a.m.

WHERE: North Rotunda, Florida State University College of Law, 425 W. Jefferson St.

Leon County invites the community to the annual 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service Ceremony on Monday, September 11, at the Florida State University College of Law, located at 425 W. Jefferson St., beginning at 11 a.m.

For the seventh year in a row, Leon County Government continues to redefine 9/11 as a day of tragedy into a day of community service. The ceremony will reflect upon Leon County’s neighborhood-wide service day that took place on Thursday, August 24. More than 100 Leon County employees and community volunteers rehabilitated more than twenty homes in the Oak Ridge neighborhood.

In this spirit of service, Holland & Knight will present the Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Service Award at the ceremony. Presented with support from the Winuk family, the fifth annual award honors local community service exemplified in Glenn J. Winuk’s heroic sacrifice at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

As part of Monday’s event, attendees will be asked to prepare military care packages and write encouraging letters to Florida service members in the United States Navy stationed in Jacksonville now deployed overseas.

Free parking will be available at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, 505 W Pensacola St.

September 11 has now emerged as the single largest day of charitable engagement. Since 2011, participation in 9/11 Day now exceeds 40 million participants annually. Leon County and its community partners encourage residents and neighbors to remember the service of others by volunteering with a local organization.
