Leon County Seeks Community Nominations for

Everyday Heroes in Remembrance of 9/11

Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Service Award nominations now open

As the fifteenth anniversary of 9/11 approaches, Leon County Government wants to recognize the extraordinary community service of a County resident. In this spirit of service, Leon County, in partnership with Holland & Knight, is now accepting nominations for the Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Service Award.

The fourth annual award honors acts of sacrificial service that were exemplified in Glenn J. Winuk’s life and in his death at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Winuk, a volunteer firefighter and EMT for almost 20 years, raced to help evacuate Holland & Knight’s New York City office, located just two blocks from the Twin Towers, on the morning of September 11, 2001.

This year’s winner will receive a $1,000 award from Holland & Knight, that will be given to the charity of his or her choice. The award is open to anyone who has demonstrated exemplary service to the community and is not limited to only first responders. Previous awards have recognized service to Honor Flight Tallahassee, veterans causes, and direct human services.

To nominate someone for the prestigious 2016 Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Service Award, visit: www.LeonCountyFL.gov/Winuk . Nominations must be completed by 5 p.m. on Friday, August  19.

The 2016 Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Service Award, recognizing local heroes who carry forward the tradition of humanitarian service, will be presented at Leon County’s sixth annual Day of Remembrance and Service Ceremony on Thursday, September 8 at the Florida State University School of Law, 425 W. Jefferson St.

For more information about the ceremony or how to apply, contact Mathieu Cavell, Director of Leon County Community and Media Relations, at (850) 606-5300 or cmr@LeonCountyFL.gov .
