Leon County Recognized for Exceptional Infrastructure Projects
Leon County Government received three Project of the Year Awards from the Big Bend Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) for delivering transformational Public Works projects that exceed the needs and improve the quality of life for County residents. Each year, APWA highlights exceptional projects that have not only met their goals within budget but have also surpassed public expectations, highlighting their quality and impact on the community.
“These award-winning projects demonstrate the County’s continuous commitment to providing safer long-lasting infrastructure," said Leon County Commission Chairman Nick Maddox.”
This year, the following Leon County Government projects received awards:
- Tram Road Culvert Replacement in the category of Environmental/Stormwater Project of the Year. The area's cross drain system was showing signs of advanced deterioration after years of wear and tear. This resulted in increased maintenance and safety issues. The project replaced the existing system of corrugated metal pipes with an equivalent system using concrete box culverts.
- Smith Creek Road Bike Lane in the category of Transportation Project of the Year. Despite being a popular place with a lot of foot traffic, the Apalachicola National Forest also has a lot of cycling trails, which are popular with avid cyclists and bicyclists regularly. The project created two five-foot-wide bike lanes on Smith Creek Road at 2.3 miles and promoted the safe use of non-motorized transportation alternatives to access the Apalachicola National Forest.
- Magnolia Drive Project in the category of Multifunction Project of the Year. Officials saw a need for improvements to enhance safety and connectivity for vehicles and pedestrians in the area. Among the improvements created by the project were an upgraded paved trail, improved landscaping, street lighting, and a new water and sewer system.
“Our Leon County teams continue to set the bar and exceed expectations,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “Every day, Leon County staff demonstrate their commitment to strengthening our community by effectively delivering public services. I am immensely proud of the work our team accomplishes.”
The APWA Awards Program promotes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor who accomplished the projects together.
