Leon County Government will present a $10,000 check to Leon County Schools (LCS) on Tuesday, April 7, at 9:45 a.m. at Montford Middle School, 5789 Pimlico Dr., to support cross country and track & field programs across the county following the successful 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships held at Leon County’s Apalachee Regional Park.
This investment fulfills the County’s commitment to dedicate a portion of total ticket sales and Fun Run registration revenue from the 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships to local cross country and track & field student-athletes, ensuring the global event leaves a lasting impact on youth athletics in the community. This effort is part of a broader strategic initiative in partnership with World Athletics to introduce, grow, and sustain the sport of cross country to the next generation of athletes.
Montford Middle School, whose boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both earned district championship titles, serves as a fitting host site, representing the strength and success of youth athletics across Leon County.
Leon County’s first-ever world championship sporting event not only united the community; it now creates a lasting legacy by directly supporting essential program needs, equipment, and expanded opportunities for student-athletes across Leon County.
Leon County and LCS officials along with student athletes will gather in the Montford Middle School gymnasium for the presentation of the check. Leon County and LCS officials will be available for interviews on-site.
