Leon County Names James Pollock Volunteer Firefighter of the Year

Leon County Names James Pollock

Volunteer Firefighter of the Year

This month, Leon County Government proudly presented the 24th Annual Jack Harron Leon County Volunteer Firefighter of the Year award to James Pollock from Bradfordville Volunteer Fire & Rescue. The award was presented during the County’s Annual Fire Truck Round Up, which recognized Leon County’s six volunteer fire departments and their service to the community.

"As a volunteer firefighter, James Pollock has served our community during difficult times, from public health emergencies to accidents and beyond," said Leon County Commission Chairman Rick Minor. "James and his fellow volunteer firefighters are an important part of public safety response throughout our County and should be commended for their commitment to service."

Pollock began serving at Bradfordville Volunteer Fire & Rescue in November 2007.  After leaving the volunteer fire department in May of 2012 to join Leon County EMS, Pollock returned to volunteer firefighting in July 2019 and has become a vital asset to his department.  Pollock has led trainings, managed medical supplies, and has proven to be an invaluable resource for his colleagues in any emergency.

"Leon County is proud to support our community’s volunteer firefighters who give their time and energy to helping others during emergencies," said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. "Through his tireless service, James has set a hire bar for future award recipients and throughout the volunteer fire departments."

The 24th Annual Fire Truck Round Up was held on October 9 at Tom Brown Park. The event recognized the dedication of Leon County’s volunteer fire departments: Bradfordville, Chaires-Capitola, Miccosukee, Lake Jackson, Lake Talquin and Woodville.  More than 600 citizens enjoyed family-friendly activities, including face painting, bounce houses, exploring a fire truck, giveaways, and more.

"Our volunteer firefighters are trained to respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice," said Leon County EMS Chief Chad Abrams. "With more than 60 active volunteer firefighters and dozens of non-responding support members, these brave men and women are an essential part of providing life-saving care in unincorporated Leon County."

For the past 24 years, the Earl Bacon Insurance Agency has sponsored the Volunteer Firefighter of the Year Award. Created in 1998 by Leon County, the award was renamed in 2010 to honor former Miccosukee Fire Chief Jack Harron, who lost his battle with cancer. Harron served 17 years as the fire chief and was instrumental in the creation of the annual Leon County Fire Truck Roundup event. Throughout his time as a firefighter, Harron exemplified putting service to the community above service to self.
