2024 NEA Big Read
Throughout March

Throughout March, join the Leon County Public Library in celebration of the 2024 NEA Big Read featuring Andrew Krivak's The Bear with immersive programs and events for all ages.

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read is designed to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System is one of 60+ nonprofit organizations to receive a grant to host an NEA Big Read project.

Keeping History Alive: The Power of Tradition and Storytelling
Saturday, March 30, at 2 p.m.
Leon County Main Library, 200 West Park Ave.


Join Leon County Government for an informative, hands-on discussion with Misty Penton, Tradition Keeper and Storyteller for the Muscogee Nation of Florida.
 
Incorporating themes from the 2024 NEA Big Read selection The Bear by Andrew Krivak, the event will focus on how generational storytelling and oral traditions help guide the people of today. Participants will learn about the importance of keeping history alive and can explore artifacts from the Muscogee Creek Nation.
 
The Leon County Library Lecture Series is free and open to the public.

Retire Old Rubber During Tire Amnesty Days

Leon County Government, in partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, is hosting its annual Tire Amnesty Days program, a free tire collection to reduce mosquito breeding grounds. Now through Friday, May 17, 2024, citizens can drop off old tires for free at the following Leon County facilities:

  • Leon County Solid Waste Facility, 7550 Apalachee Pkwy.
  • Rural Waste Center – Fort Braden, 2485 East Joe Thomas Rd.
  • Rural Waste Center – Miccosukee, 13051 Miccosukee Rd.
  • Rural Waste Center – Woodville, 549 Henry Jones Rd.

Residents may dispose of up to 25 passenger car tires free of charge. Commercial loads will not be accepted. Tires without rims are preferred.

Celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in history, culture, and society during Women's History Month with art exhibitions, a workshop, a scavenger hunt, and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System.

Leon Works Junior Apprenticeship
EARN WHILE LEARNING NEW SKILLS


The Leon Works Junior Apprenticeship program provides a platform for high school juniors and seniors to immerse themselves in a skilled career field, earn an hourly salary, and receive class credit. Apprentices will have the opportunity to train with experts in a variety of Leon County departments and fast-track their career goals. Applications are open now for the fall 2024 semester for the following positions:

  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Construction Contract Management
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)/Paramedic
  • Fleet Mechanic
  • Graphic and Digital Design
  • Information Technology
  • Medical Administration
  • Web Development

County Apologizes for the History of Slavery and Racism in Leon County
 
On February 20, 2024, the Leon County Board of County Commissioners approved the adoption of a resolution acknowledging and apologizing for the history of slavery and racism in Leon County. The resolution underscores Leon County’s unwavering dedication to advancing equality and ensuring the protection of the fundamental rights of individuals regardless of race, color, religion, or national origin. Leon County is committed to recognizing the misdeeds suffered by African Americans during the eras of slavery and Jim Crow and to working toward eliminating racial prejudices, injustices, and discrimination from our society. Children's Services Council of Leon County Summer Youth Expo
Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The Children's Services Council (CSC) of Leon County invites families and caregivers to the 2024 Summer Youth Expo on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at FAMU DRS, 400 West Orange Avenue. Attendees can learn about engaging summer programs happening around the community and sign up for camps, jobs, volunteer opportunities, and other activities. The event will also feature family-friendly games, giveaways, and free food and music. Learn more at CSCLeon.org/SummerYouthExpo.
