Black History Month

Celebrate the contributions, triumphs, and achievements of Black Americans during Black History Month with the African American Read-In, movie screenings, a genealogy event, story times, and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System.

Spring Seed Library Kickoff

The Spring Seed Library will kick off on Saturday, February 18, with vegetable and fruit seeds available for checkout at all library locations. Check out five seed packets per month with a library card, or three packets without a library card. Now is the perfect time to apply for a free library card or check the status of your card!

Join us for the 2023 Spring Seed Library Kickoff event at the Main Library on Saturday, February 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in demonstrations and activities with UF/IFAS Leon County Extension and the Leon County Office of Resource Stewardship.

Leon Works Expo Exhibitor Registration Now Open

Leon County Government and the Tallahassee-Leon County Office of Economic Vitality will host the eighth annual Leon Works Expo on Friday, April 28, 2023, at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. The Expo will connect hundreds of local high school students to employers and academic institutions, creating opportunities to explore careers in the skilled workforce. From now until Friday, February 10, interested exhibitors can register using the promotion code “LeonWorks23” for $10 off their registration.

Leon Works Junior Apprenticeship Program Accepting Applications

Calling all Leon County high school juniors and seniors! Earn a paycheck while building valuable workforce skills through the award-winning Leon Works Junior Apprenticeship Program. High school juniors and seniors who attend a public, charter, private, or Leon County virtual school are encouraged to apply. Applications are currently being accepted for the fall 2023 semester through Friday, March 31.

Protect Your Home From Flooding

Flooding can occur anytime, anywhere, yet most homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. Even if a property owner, renter or business is not required to purchase flood insurance, serious consideration should be given to purchasing it anyway. Leon County encourages citizens to learn more about the importance of flood insurance and how to sign up at LeonCountyFL.gov/FloodProtection.

Retire Old Rubber With Tire Amnesty Days

Leon County Government, in partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, is hosting its annual Tire Amnesty Days program, a free tire collection to reduce mosquito breeding grounds. Now through Friday, May 26, 2023, citizens can drop off old tires for free at the following Leon County facilities:

  • Leon County Solid Waste Facility, 7550 Apalachee Pkwy.
  • Rural Waste Center – Woodville, 549 Henry Jones Rd.
  • Rural Waste Center – Fort Braden, 2485 East Joe Thomas Rd.
  • Rural Waste Center – Miccosukee, 13051 Miccosukee Rd.
Residents may dispose of up to 25 passenger car tires free of charge. Commercial loads will not be accepted. Tires without rims are preferred.
