This Saturday, Leon County Government will launch the new Downtown Heritage Trail, a tour showcasing 13 historically significant sites in downtown Tallahassee.
The trail will be celebrated with a community walk led by Leon County Division of Tourism Staff and County Elected Officials on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021, at 10 a.m. Participants will be treated to a walking tour beginning on the steps of the historic Walker Library (Bar 1903) with stops at the Knott House, The John. G. Riley House Center & Museum, Smokey Hollow and Cascades Park to round out the approximately 0.8-mile tour. Each stop will be highlighted with a brief overview of the historic significance of the location and its role on the Trail and will end with refreshments at the Leon County Visitor Information Center in Cascades Park. Guided Tours in Florida’s Capital and the Forgotten Coast will be on hand with its electric golf cart to offer transportation to attendees who are unable to walk.
The Heritage Trail program was developed in partnership with Leon County, the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority, John G. Riley House Museum, City of Tallahassee, Florida Department of State, the Tallahassee Historical Society and local community leaders. The trail will be promoted on the Visit Tallahassee website and mobile app and with a printed brochure that will be available at the Visitor Information Center at Cascades Park and at featured sites on the trail.
The Downtown Heritage Trail is part of the Tallahassee Heritage Trails project, an ongoing program with additional trails to be added focusing on a wide assortment of subjects including civil rights, music and more. The Heritage Trails are designed to promote exploration through mapped routes that engage residents and visitors to learn more about the area’s people, places and history.
