Leon County Hosts First Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Event of the Season

WHO:       Leon County
WHAT:     Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection
WHEN:     Saturday, September 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WHERE:   Public Works Operations Center, 2280 Miccosukee Road

The Leon County Solid Waste Management Division rescheduled the first Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection of the season due to Hurricane Hermine. The rescheduled collection event will take place on Saturday, September 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Public Works Operations Center, 2280 Miccosukee Road. This event is the first of Leon County’s regular collection season, which will continue on the first Saturday of every month through May 2017.

As a reminder, when discarded, many household products can pollute and pose a health risk, so the division holds these free events for County residents. Businesses and other agencies must call (850) 606-1816 to make an appointment, Monday through Friday, to drop off their items at the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center, 7550 Apalachee Parkway. Some fees will apply.

Leon County and the City of Tallahassee will pick up and dispose of yard waste, demolition debris and other materials at the curb. Citizens in the city limits and the unincorporated area will be serviced within two weeks. Debris should be separated at the curb into the following categories: vegetative, construction and demolition, appliances and white goods, electronics, and household hazardous waste.

As part of the debris removal plan, please note the following:

  • debris removal service will be performed for all citizens in Leon County and the City of Tallahassee
  • yard waste will now be collected at the same time as storm debris until further notice
  • do not bag yard debris
  • debris removal trucks will not pick up household garbage; Waste Pro will continue to collect trash and recycling
  • perishable food waste should be placed in garbage containers for regular pick up
  • do not stack or lean debris against sprinkler heads, meters, poles, trees, backflows, and other structures

At the collection event, citizens may bring up to 50 pounds of hazardous waste, in addition to their electronics. Only one large-screen television per vehicle will be accepted. Propane tanks must weigh less than 40 pounds and there is a limit of one tire per participant. There is also a limit of 25 fluorescent tubes per vehicle at the collection event. Medical sharps, medicines and radioactive waste cannot be accepted. The division cannot accept bulky wastes such as appliances (refrigerators, stoves/ovens, washing machines, dryers, etc.), furniture, yard waste, construction and demolition debris, household garbage or Styrofoam.

For more information, call the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center at (850) 606-1803 or visit www.LeonCountyFL.gov/HHW/collection/ for the complete collection schedule and safe packing guide.
