Leon County Hosts 11th Annual 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service
Volunteers Beautified 15 Homes in the Capital City Estates Neighborhood
Today, Leon County Government held its annual 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service in the Capital City Estates neighborhood. In the spirit of unity and service, more than 60 County employees, community partners, and citizen volunteers completed various rehabilitation projects. The County’s annual tradition honors those who came together in service in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
“The County proudly continues this great tradition to serve others in remembrance of those 3,000 lives lost on September 11,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Bill Proctor. “Through service to the community, we also honor and remember the first responders, armed forces, and countless others who rose in service following the tragic attacks 21 years ago.”
Throughout the day, volunteers completed various housing rehabilitation projects at 15 homes in the Capital City Estates neighborhood, including exterior home painting, tree and hedge trimming, driveway pressure washing, and more. Volunteers also completed repairs to the steeple of the nearby Crossway Baptist Church.
“With the dedication and support of so many Leon County staff and community volunteers, we are proud to continue this great tradition of giving back to the community in remembrance of the victims and heroes of September 11,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “Today we honor their memory united in service to our community.”
Since 2011, Leon County Government has held the 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service to honor victims, survivors, and others who rose in service in response to the attacks. Over the years, volunteers have completed rehabilitation and beautification projects at more than 160 homes throughout Leon County.
"While Crossway Baptist Church has been actively serving our community for decades, we are thankful to stage this year’s 9/11 event and appreciate all the County volunteers that have joined in helping those in our community,” said Pastor Stan Proctor of Crossway Baptist Church. “Crossway is a place to find purpose in helping others; it’s a place to belong."
