Leon County COVID-19 Community Update for April 17

April 17, 2020

As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread globally, Leon County Emergency Management is committed to actively monitoring the disease and coordinating preparedness efforts with local health officials, healthcare providers, first responders, and other critical emergency response functions.

The following update provides a timely, accurate, and vetted source of official County and community information.

Significant Changes since Last Update

  • Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency Board Activates $1M Grant for Non-Profits Impacted by COVID-19More here. Applications will go live on April 17 at 12 p.m. at www.OEVFORBusiness.org/LEAN
  • President Trump announces guidelines for opening up America again. The White House outlined a three-phase plan called Opening Up America Again. In short, the plan establishes data-driven conditions that should be met before reopening and then outlines what states should do to meet future challenges in a phased and specific approach. More here.
  • Supervisor of Elections Encourages All Voters to Request Vote-by-Mail Ballots for the 2020 Primary and General Elections. Voting by mail allows voters to cast their ballots from the safety and comfort of their own homes, minimizes interactions with other people, and helps to maintain social distancing. More here.
  • Comcast Provides 2 Months of Free High-Speed Internet. Comcast is making it easier for low-income households to get connected. Applications due May 13. More here.
  • County Joins with Shop Tally to Launch Pay It Forward Initiative. On Wednesday, Leon County launched its Pay It Forward Initiative, which is a web-based shopping portal that gives customers the opportunity to purchase gift cards from local businesses and immediately donate those cards to support nonprofits on the frontline of providing services to those in need. More here 
  • The Internal Revenue Service Launches Tool to Track Status of Stimulus Checks. Individuals can now check Get My Payment for the status of their economic impact payment. More here.
  • COVID-19 by the Numbers. Turning to our public health update, global cases of COVID-19 now surpass 2 million. According to the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) there are 164 positive cases of COVID-19 in Leon County. In Florida, there are now 24,119 positive cases of COVID-19, and 686 COVID-19-related deaths. These numbers are updated regularly by FDOH; visit the dashboard for more detailed information, here
  • RENEWED - At Tuesday's Commission meeting, the Board of County Commissioners voted to renew the Leon County curfew effective Wednesday, April 15 at 11 p.m. The curfew will be consistent with Governor DeSantis' executive order and must be renewed each week along with the declared local state of emergency. The curfew is a further effort to protect public health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic and will be in effect each night from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Click here to see the news release.
