Leon County Commissioner Bryan Desloge Now President of
the National Association of Counties
On Monday, Leon County District 4 Commissioner Bryan Desloge ascended to president of the National Association of Counties (NACo) during the 81st Annual Conference and Exposition, which was held July 22-25, in Long Beach, Calif. This achievement marks the first time ever a Leon County Commissioner will lead NACo, and more than two decades since a county commissioner from Florida held the prestigious position.
“NACo plays a vital role in addressing the challenges communities face nationwide,” said Desloge. “It is an honor to represent Leon County on a national level and also to advance home rule focusing on civility and diversity."
As president of NACo, Desloge will represent the nation's more than 3,000 counties in Washington D.C. and across the country. Desloge will focus his year as president on advancing civility in political dialogue.
“I look forward to calling Commissioner Desloge Mr. President for the next year,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Bill Proctor. “As president, he will hold up Leon County as an example of what happens when local government does it right. And also, he will learn from the nation how best to tackle our tough issues at home.”
Desloge has served on the Leon County Board of County Commissioners for almost ten years and was chairman from 2009-2010. After his appointment to the NACo Board of Directors in 2012, he has subsequently served on its Financial Services Corporation Advisory Committee and as Vice Chair of the Behavioral Health Subcommittee. Desloge is also a 2007 graduate of NACo’s County Leadership Institute, and he served as President of the Florida Association of Counties.
Along with his role in Leon County government, Desloge has been active with and has served on several boards, including the executive board of Florida Blood Services and Florida State School of Business Board of Governors. In 2012, he was appointed by Governor Scott as Chairman on the Board of Directors for the Early Learning Coalition (ELC) of the Big Bend Region.
“Commissioner Desloge has been a strong leader at the local and state levels for many years now,” said NACo Executive Director Matthew Chase. “His experience as a public servant, business owner, and state and regional board member, will position him to lead our national association with poise as president.”
NACo’s Annual Conference provides county officials with a great opportunity to vote on NACo’s policies related to federal legislation and regulation; network with colleagues; and, learn about issues impacting counties as well as the innovative programs counties across the country are establishing.
The National Association of Counties (NACo) unites America’s 3,069 county governments. Founded in 1935, NACo brings county officials together to advocate with a collective voice on national policy, exchange ideas and build new leadership skills, pursue transformational county solutions, enrich the public’s understanding of county government, and exercise exemplary leadership in public service.
