Leon County Celebrates Native American Heritage Month with Library Programs and Resources

Leon County Government celebrates the achievements and contributions of Native peoples past and present during Native American Heritage Month with programs and resources from the Leon County Public Library. Curated book lists, movie watchlists, and digital content give residents of all ages the opportunity to learn about the inspiring Indigenous men and women who have shaped our community and the world. Native American Heritage Month, also called American Indian Heritage Month and American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, takes place each November.

In addition to these resources, residents are invited to attend the County’s upcoming Native American Heritage Month events:

  • Virtual Author Talk with Joseph Lee, Wednesday, November 5, at 2 p.m., virtual – Author Joseph Lee discusses Nothing More of This Land: Community, Power, and the Search for Indigenous Identity, a powerful memoir exploring family, culture, and what it means to belong.
  • Echoes of the Land: Exploring Native American Music, Monday, November 10, at 6 p.m., Leon County Main Library – Learn about the music and soundscapes of the Apalachee community at Mission San Luis and the musical traditions of 17th- and 18th-century Native Americans in Tallahassee with Florida State University professor of musicology Dr. Sarah Eyerly.
  • From Lake Miccosukee to the Everglades: Native Voices of the Apalachee Region, available now – Recorded as part of our Library Lecture Series, hear from Edward Randall Ornstein, Esq. about the history, resilience, and stewardship of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida. The lecture traces the community’s journey from Lake Miccosukee to the Everglades, highlights the impact of colonization and conflict, and showcases the Tribe’s leadership and environmental work today.
Throughout the month and all year long, Leon County Government is proud to celebrate the rich and diverse history, heritage, and culture of Native peoples. A complete list of resources and events is available at LeonCountyFL.gov/NativeAmericanHeritageMonth.
