Leon County and Holland & Knight Accepting Nominations
for Community Heroes
Nominations now open for Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Service Award
Leon County Government and the Holland & Knight law firm are now accepting applications for the Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Service Award. The award recognizes community members who exemplify extraordinary service and sacrifice for others. Nominations are due by Monday, August 26 at 5 p.m.
Holland & Knight will make a donation of $1,000 to a charity selected by the award winner. The winner will be announced at Holland & Knight’s Day of Remembrance and Service Ceremony at the Florida State University School of Law, 425 W. Jefferson St. on Wednesday, September 11 at 10 a.m., and will also later be recognized at a Leon County Commission meeting.
This humanitarian service award honors those who sacrificed their lives in service of others, just as Glenn J. Winuk did during the attacks on September 11, 2001. Holland & Knight created the award in 2012 to honor its former partner Glenn J. Winuk, a New York-based attorney and volunteer firefighter/EMT who was killed on 9/11 in the collapse of the World Trade Center. After helping to evacuate Holland & Knight’s New York City office located just two blocks from the towers, Glenn entered the South Tower with a borrowed medical bag to render medical assistance. He died when the South Tower collapsed. He was posthumously awarded the 9/11 Heroes Medal of Valor by President Obama and the Department of Justice.
Leon County and the Holland & Knight law firm present the award to those who have performed both one-time heroic acts as well as years of service. Previous winners have been recognized for their service in events like Honor Flight Tallahassee, direct human services and veterans causes.
