Leon County, American Legion Celebrate Veterans During 10th Annual Operation Thank You Community Breakfast

Today, Leon County Government and American Legion Sauls-Bridges Post 13 hosted the annual Operation Thank You community breakfast to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans of the United States Armed Forces. In gratitude, Leon County Commissioners, County staff, American Legion members, and community volunteers served breakfast to the more than 450 veterans and their families in attendance.

"Leon County is proud to continue this great tradition of recognizing the bravery and sacrifices of military veterans and their families," said Leon County Commission Chairman Bill Proctor. "For 10 years, the Leon County Operation Thank You program has demonstrated our unwavering support and appreciation for the 17,000 veterans living in our community."

During the event, the County recognized veterans and presented a Veterans Day proclamation to Gordon Lightfoot, U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines during the Vietnam War. The proclamation recognized Lightfoot as an active member of various local and national veteran groups and commended his commitment to honoring the memory and history of U.S. veterans.

"The annual Operation Thank You breakfast is an opportunity for the County and the community to express gratitude to local veterans for their service to our country," said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. "On Veterans Day and all year long, the County is committed to serving and supporting local veterans and their families."

Since 2012, Leon County has held Operation Thank You events annually, giving the community an opportunity to thank the brave men and women who have served or continue to serve their country in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Operation Thank You breakfast is one of the community’s largest events to show appreciation for the more than 17,000 veterans who call Leon County home.

"The Sauls-Bridges Post 13 of the American Legion is proud of our continued partnership with Leon County to host the annual Operation Thank You Veterans Day breakfast," said Post 13 Commander Val Frailey. "This is one of many events Post 13 hosts throughout the year to support the veteran community."

Leon County remains committed to supporting local veterans all year long with services and programs offered by the Leon County Division of Veteran Services. The Division assists veterans and their dependents in securing all entitled benefits earned through their honorable military service and advocates for veterans’ interests in the community.
