Leon County is proud to announce the launch of History in Your Hands: Historical Maps, an all-new mapping resource that allows users to take virtual tours and access self-guided walking tours of Tallahassee-Leon County’s past. To launch this new resource to the public, Leon County is hosting local youth leadership organization, Omega Lamplighters, in a self-guided walking tour of local historical sites.

In the morning, the Omega Lamplighters will tour FAMU Union Bank, FAMU Black Archives and the Riley Museum. The tour will break at noon at Smokey Hollow for the lunch program. Local officials, historians, and experts on the new resource will be available for media interviews at 12 p.m. In the afternoon, the tour will continue at the Downtown Heritage Walk, then The Grove Museum and will conclude at the County Courthouse.

The new mapping resource offers 19 total maps that span over 400 years of local history. Through hundreds of archival photos and source document links available online at TLCGIS.org/history, residents can explore historical neighborhood maps, learn about historical names and faces, view way markers and launch self-guided history tours. The Tallahassee Leon County Geographic Information Systems worked with tourism staff,  Florida Archives, Florida Memory and local entities to create the all new resource.
