County’s Award-Winning Created Equal Program to Address Experience of Black Women in America
Created Equal Returns to Continue Crucial Community Dialogue

As part of the Club of Honest Citizens series, Leon County Government and The Village Square will host the eighth annual Created Equal program entitled, “Created Equal: Black Women and the Fight for Equality” on Thursday, March 23, at The Moon, 1105 E. Lafayette St. This award-winning program will examine the histories and current realities of Black women in America and the struggles they continue to face in the areas of health, economy, community, and education.

Black women in America have historically faced an intersectional disadvantage due to both race and gender discrimination, and these challenges continue to persist today. A panel discussion featuring academic experts, industry professionals, and community members will encourage attendees to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and understand the experiences of Black women.

Dr. Temple Robinson is the Chief Executive Officer at Bond Community Health Center. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Robinson was the Chief Medical Officer at Bond, with a total of 18 years dedicated to the health center. Dr. Robinson completed her medical training at the Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and has dedicated her career in internal medicine to serving the Tallahassee area’s most vulnerable populations.
Dr. Tamara Bertrand Jones is the Associate Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Florida State University. Her research examines the sociocultural influences on socialization during graduate education and the professional experiences of underrepresented populations, particularly Black women, in academia. Dr. Jones also serves as the founder and past president of the Sisters of the Academy Institute, an international organization that promotes collaborative scholarship and networking among Black women in the academy.
Christic Henry is a neighborhood advocate and the President and Managing Broker of Kingdom First Realty. Her love for community, youth, and grassroots advocacy drives her passion for volunteerism. A former AmeriCorp volunteer at Bond Elementary School, Henry’s love for Tallahassee blossomed under the care and support she received from Southside neighbors during her term of service.
Dr. Shawnta Friday-Stroud is Vice President for University Advancement and Executive Director of the FAMU Foundation. Previously, she was Dean of the nationally recognized School of Business and Industry at Florida A&M University. She is a former McKnight Doctoral Fellow and a former McKnight Junior Faculty Development Fellow. Dr. Friday-Stroud has more than 18 years of consulting experience in the areas of strategic planning, leadership training, diversity course development and training, employee attitudinal assessments, workload analysis, strategic market assessment and program evaluation.
Nicole Everett will moderate the conversation. She is the host of Conversations with Nicole. Everett is an alumnus of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University with undergraduate degrees in both Business Administration and Business Economics. She has served in the affordable housing arena for almost 20 years and volunteers with several community organizations and initiatives located in the Big Bend area.
The award-winning Created equal program builds on the success of previous events and continue to encourage frank conversations on race and racial inequity. Citizens will be invited to join the discussion during roundtable conversations after the panel.
