County Pop Warner Team Heads to National Showdown

Woodville Teal Jaguars To Compete in the Pop Warner Super Bowl Championship

This week, Leon County and Big Bend Pop Warner’s own Woodville Teal Jaguars will compete in the Pop Warner Super Bowl and National Cheer and Dance Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex™ in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Woodville Teal Jaguars won their first Division III Bowl Game on Monday, December 5, beating the Dutch Fork Falcons of Columbia, S.C. 33-0. They will play again on Thursday, December 8.

“When we invest in youth sports, we know that we’re making a difference for a lifetime,” said Leon County Commission Chairman John E. Dailey. “Our Woodville Teal Jaguars team is a testament to dedication, talent, and how you can achieve your dreams. We look forward to welcoming them back as champions!”

The Woodville Teal Jaguars, comprised of boys 10-13 years old, are one of five Division III teams in the Big Bend area and one of 179 teams in the state of Florida. After a 7-1 regular season record and 4-0 playoff record, the Woodville Teal Jaguars won four local championships, including the Pop Warner Regional Southeast Championship.

“Big Bend Pop Warner couldn’t ask for a better partner than Leon County,” said Mike Wallace, Vice President and Training Director for Big Bend Pop Warner. “This championship experience is unlike anything our players have seen. They will be treated like collegiate athletes, receiving tutoring sessions to continue school work and have an opportunity to compete against the best teams in the country. For them, Christmas has come early.”

64 football teams from across the country will compete for National Championships in 5 different age/weight ranges, Jr. Pee Wee, Pee Wee, Jr. Varsity, Varsity and Unlimited. Select games will be featured on ESPN 3. More information is available online at http://pointstreaksites.com/view/popwarner

“The County plays host to national track and field events, soccer competitions, and much more,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “But it’s also good to know that we have world-class youth athletes living right here in our community. So while we import great sports talent, we also export it, too.”

Pop Warner consists of approximately 325,000 youth ranging from ages 5 to 16 years old, with participants in 42 states in America and several countries around the world. Pop Warner's commitment to academics is what separates the program from other youth sports around the world as the only national youth sports organization that requires scholastic aptitude to participate.
