County, City and Shop Local 850 Encourage the Community to Shop Local This Holiday Season
As you begin your holiday gift shopping, consider buying the perfect gift from a local business. At yesterday’s press conference, Leon County Government, the City of Tallahassee and Shop Local 850 announced the inaugural Shop Local 850 Holiday Weekend will be held Dec. 8-10. This effort encourages the community to support local businesses this holiday season.
“Local business owners are the people you see at your kids’ game, around town or at a local park,” Leon County Commission Chairman Nick Maddox said. “For years, Leon County has been committed to growing and diversifying our local economy by supporting the businesses that support our community.”
According to Shop Local 850’s research, for every 2.5 percent spent at a local business, it has the same economic impact of an entire football season. Additionally, research shows that local businesses are more likely to support other local businesses, thus extending the reach of each dollar spent within the community.
“Local businesses are the backbone of our community, and it’s up to all of us to support them,” Mayor Andrew Gillum said. “This weekend, I am calling on everyone to join me and shop local, ensuring that our money continues to strengthen our community.”
Shop Local 850’s goal is to help the community’s independent businesses remain vibrant and thriving. Additionally, the Tallahassee – Leon County Office of Economic Vitality works every day to grow and enhance small businesses.
“Shopping local means spending money with your neighbors in business down the street,” said Joe Berg, Shop Local 850. “Where you shop matters, and this season, you also give a gift to yourself and your village when you shop local.”
