County Celebrates Native American Heritage Month with Library Events and Resources
Leon County Government celebrates the achievements and contributions of Native peoples past and present during Native American Heritage Month with a book club, story times, and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System. Thematic book lists and movie watchlists give citizens of all ages the opportunity to learn about the inspiring Indigenous men and women who helped shape our community and the world. Native American Heritage Month, also called American Indian Heritage Month and American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, takes place each November.
In addition to these in-person and digital resources, citizens are encouraged to attend the County’s upcoming Native American Heritage Month events.
- Preschool Story Time, various dates, times, and locations – Designed for children ages three to six, these story times will feature songs, rhymes, and stories focused on Native American Heritage Month.
- Three Sisters Harvest: 2nd Saturday Program from the Museum of Florida History, Saturday, November 12 at 11 a.m., downtown Main Library – In partnership with the Museum of Florida History, learn about the Three Sisters (maize, beans, and squash) and the importance of these crops to Indigenous peoples. Join us for a story time reading of “The Corn Lady,” a Seminole Tribe of Florida story adapted by Betty Mae Jumper, and make a corn husk doll to take home.
- Family Story Time, Saturday, November 19 at 11 a.m., Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library – Families can enjoy songs, rhymes, and stories in honor of Native American Heritage Month. This program is designed for caregivers and children ages five and younger, but all ages are welcome!
- Adult Fiction/Nonfiction Book Club, Tuesday, December 6 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom – Select a nonfiction Native American Heritage book of your choice and then discuss your selection during this book club. Read a book from our librarian-curated book list or select your own.
