County Celebrates First Disc Golf Course and New Playground at Jackson View Park
This morning, Leon County Government celebrated two new recreational amenities at Jackson View Park with the opening of the County’s first disc golf course and an enhanced playground. The celebration featured remarks from County leaders, staff and a representative from the Tallahassee Disc Golf Association. Following the ribbon-cutting and ceremonial first throw, attendees had the opportunity to experience the new disc golf course, enjoy the upgraded playground and celebrate these enhancements to a beloved community park.
“Parks are an important part of what makes our community a great place to live,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Christian Caban. “When we invest in parks, we invest in experiences and memories. We create places where families can spend time together, neighbors can meet one another and people can discover new interests.”
Developed in collaboration with the Tallahassee Disc Golf Association, the new disc golf course features nine holes spanning more than 2,100 feet across nearly nine acres. Designed for players of all skill levels, the course introduces a new recreational activity for residents while expanding opportunities to enjoy the outdoors close to home.
“These improvements are a great example of what we can accomplish when we work together with a shared goal of making Leon County an even better place to live, work and raise a family,” said Leon County District 3 Commissioner Rick Minor. “From introducing a new sport to creating an inviting playground for children, these improvements make our parks places where the entire community can come together.”
In addition to the disc golf course, the County introduced an upgraded playground at Jackson View Park featuring safety surfacing designed for children ages 2 to 12 and an ADA-accessible swing. Soon, the playground will also be equipped with a new shade sail. The enhancements to the Jackson View Park playground were designed to create a more comfortable and inclusive space for children and families.
“Leon County is committed to creating spaces where residents can connect, stay active and enjoy the outdoors,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “The new disc golf course and enhanced playground at Jackson View Park reflect our continued investment in recreational opportunities that bring people together and strengthen our community.”
Beyond the new disc golf course and playground, Jackson View Park now features a parking area closer to the playground, new benches, tables and water-filling stations. This celebration highlighted Leon County’s continued efforts to enhance public spaces and provide recreational opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities.
“We’re so excited to introduce the community to Leon County’s first disc golf course while also making upgrades to existing park features for a more comfortable and accessible space for children and families,” said Leon County Parks and Recreation Director Amanda Heidecker. “Whether residents are trying out disc golf for the first time or enjoying the afternoon at the playground, we hope these improvements inspire everyone to get outside and enjoy their local parks.”
“Over the last several months, it has been a pleasure working with Leon County to develop this disc golf course,” said Laymon Gray, co-founder of the Tallahassee Disc Golf Association. “We were proud that they thought of us when developing the County’s first disc golf course. I hope this course will introduce people to the sport, encourage friendly competition and create opportunities for community events and organized play.”
