County Celebrates Black History Month with Library Events and Resources
Leon County Government celebrates the contributions, triumphs, and achievements of Black Americans during Black History Month with events and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System. Thematic book lists and movie watchlists give citizens of all ages the opportunity to learn about the inspiring men and women who helped shape our community and the world.
In addition to these in-person and digital resources, citizens are encouraged to attend the County’s upcoming Black History Month events with something for everyone.
- Charlie Ward's Heisman Trophy: The Bronze Legend Exhibit Opening, Saturday, February 1, from 2-3 p.m., downtown Main Library – Celebrate the opening of a new exhibit featuring legendary Florida State University quarterback and NBA point guard Charlie Ward’s Heisman Trophy. Light refreshments will be provided.
- Black History Legacies and Legends: Jeopardy Edition, Tuesday, February 11, from 6-7:30 p.m., Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library – Explore the rich history and culture of Black communities with an exciting night of trivia. From historical milestones to modern-day legends, challenge yourself and your friends during this engaging and inspiring event.
- African American Read-In, Saturday, February 15, from 1-2 p.m., downtown Main Library – Join us for the annual Leon County African American Read-In featuring children's books by African American authors. This event brings the community together to build literacy skills by enjoying children’s stories read aloud by local speakers. Audience members will also be invited to read from a selection of books provided by the library. Light refreshments will be provided.
- Virtual Author Talk: I Am Nobody’s Slave with Lee Hawkins, Tuesday, February 18, from 2-3 p.m., virtual – Join journalist and author Lee Hawkins as he discusses his memoir, I Am Nobody's Slave: How Uncovering My Family’s History Set Me Free, which explores his family's legacy of post-enslavement trauma and resilience.
- Exploring Tallahassee’s Black History from the Antebellum Era to Reconstruction, Wednesday, February 19, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., downtown Main Library – Discover Tallahassee's African American history during the Civil War and Reconstruction with the John G. Riley Center & Museum.
