County and City Announce Shelter Opening

County and City Announce Shelter Opening

In anticipation of high winds, Leon County and the City of Tallahassee announce the opening of a general population and pet-accessible shelter at 3 p.m at Lawton Chiles High School, 7200 Lawton Chiles Lane. The shelter will be operated by the American Red Cross.

County and City also caution about high winds generated by Tropical Storm Hermine. First responders and crews will respond to emergency calls and downed trees once winds become less severe.

Individuals should prepare to leave their homes earlier in the day to avoid traveling during dangerous weather conditions. Families and individuals are advised to bring along basic emergency and personal items that will be needed in the shelter. The American Red Cross also advises bringing bedding, special dietary foods, important medical documents, and medications.

As a pet-accessible shelter, the location can accommodate domestic pets. Shelterees who must bring exotic pets should do so in necessary enclosures with a secure lid. Also, please bring collars, leashes, veterinary records, food, and medications.
