CONA, County, City Recognize Winning Neighborhoods and Neighbors at Annual Awards
Last night, the 2017 Annual Neighborhood Awards reception, hosted by the Council of Neighborhood Associations (CONA), the City of Tallahassee and Leon County, honored winning neighborhoods and neighbors at the historic Women’s Club of Tallahassee in Los Robles.
Seven winners from the City of Tallahassee and Leon County were named. Winners in the Large Neighborhood of the Year category (more than 200 homes) were the Greater Bond Community for City of Tallahassee and the Levy Park Neighborhood Association for Leon County. Winners in the Small Neighborhood of the Year category (200 or fewer homes) were Silver Ridge Estates for City of Tallahassee and the Blairstone Forest Homeowner’s Association for Leon County. The winner of the Leon County Unincorporated Neighborhood of the Year (outside the city limits) was the Avondale Homeowner’s Association. Winning neighborhoods receive a sign to display at their entrance and bragging rights as a Neighborhood of the Year.
Winners of the Neighbor of the Year category were Albert “Bobby” Reeves, Macon School and Community Association, for City of Tallahassee and Donna Elliot, Seminole Manor Neighborhood Association, for Leon County.
“Neighborhoods are more than just physical places, more than collections of houses situated in close proximity to one another; instead, they are active social communities that connect people and places to possibilities,” Mayor Andrew Gillum said. “As the foundation of our community, we raise up our neighborhoods and recognize them for enhancing the quality of life enjoyed by Tallahassee residents.”
"Our annual Neighborhood Recognition Program shines a light on the County's vibrant neighborhoods and community servants who call Leon County home," said Leon County Commission Chairman John E. Dailey. "Strong neighborhoods make up the very fabric of our community, making Leon County a special place to live, work and play."
CONA presented its annual Public Servant of the Year Award to the electric linemen with the City of Tallahassee and Talquin Electric Cooperative and the Business Neighbor of the Year Award to the Tallahassee-Leon Federal Credit Union.
"I am pumped! This year's event was definitely a special one,” said Leroy Peck, president of CONA. “The role that local neighbors and neighborhoods play in preserving the character of and love within our community is a valuable one. We are looking forward to facilitating wonderful connections as we continue to honor and celebrate the people and places that make a difference in our community."
