Community Invited to a Picnic in the Park
Join City and County Officials in Saying Thank You to Hurricane Heroes

Before, during and after Hurricane Hermine, hundreds of people in our community stepped up to help, including electric lineman, public works crews, first responders, volunteers, neighborhood leaders and many others. This weekend, the community is invited to join Leon County and City of Tallahassee officials at a picnic to thank these men and women. The picnic will take place on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Tom Brown Park.

This free community event will include complimentary hot dogs and drinks, live music, stage performances, children’s games, educational booths, face painting, bounce houses, balloon games and a photo booth. There will also be demonstrations by City electric line crews.

First responders from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Leon County Emergency Medical Services, Tallahassee Police Department and Tallahassee Fire Departments will have booths featuring various activities from helicopter displays to K-9 demonstrations. Public Works and Utility trucks, along with other equipment used by teams in the field to help clear roads and restore power, will be on display as well.

Beginning at 2 p.m., special guests representing local governments, our business community and the Institute for Nonprofit Innovation and Excellence will provide comments recognizing workers and their families.

Prior to Sept. 2, 2016, Tallahassee / Leon County had not been struck by a hurricane since 1985, and a hurricane had not made landfall in the State of Florida since 2005. Hurricane Hermine damaged 80 percent of the City’s electric distribution system and brought down hundreds of trees, creating thousands of tons of debris. Despite being hit head on by a Category 1 hurricane, Florida’s Capital City and County demonstrated unprecedented resiliency and was back up and running in a matter of days.
