City and County Officials Report on Response Efforts

Following Hurricane Hermine

This morning, Leon County Government and City of Tallahassee officials and Emergency Management staff provided an update on the impacts of Hurricane Hermine and the recovery efforts.

A category 1 hurricane, Hermine was the first hurricane for the state in 11 years and the first hurricane for the Tallahassee/Leon County area in nearly 30 years. Initial reports for Leon County indicate Hurricane Hermine brought approximately 4-5 inches of rain and wind gusts up to 65 mph to the area.

Crews continue to work diligently to assess the extent of the damage caused by Hermine, including hundreds of downed trees and power lines. City Utilities, which experienced damage to more than 80 percent of its system, and Talquin Electric are aware of the significant number of power outages in the area impacting more than 100,000 customers combined. Crews are working as quickly as possible to repair damaged equipment, however power restoration could take several days.

City Utilities would also like to remind citizens that they need to treat a wire on the ground as dangerous. If you see a downed wire, please do not go near it, touch it, walk over it or drive over it. To report downed wires, please call 891-4YOU (4968).

Residents are strongly urged to avoid travel if at all possible. Staying off the roadways will allow crews to work more quickly. Additionally, many traffic lights are out of operation. If travel is necessary, drivers should treat non-working traffic signals as four way stops.
