Capital Cascades Crossing Opening Celebration to be Held October 17

Capital Cascades Crossing Opening Celebration to be Held October 17

The City of Tallahassee, Leon County and Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency will host a celebration in honor of the completion of the Capital Cascades Crossing Bridge and Trail on Monday, October 17.  The public is invited to join local business operators, elected officials and the project team beginning at 6 p.m. at the corner of S. Adams Street and W. Van Buren Street.

Capital Cascades Crossing includes a multi-use trail that extends three city blocks and connects the Cascades Park segment of the trail with the FAMU Way segment of the trail. This trail provides connectivity for the surrounding communities making them easily accessible by bike or on foot. People can now walk or bike to work, entertainment and shopping using this facility as Downtown, FSU, College Town, Gaines Street, FAMU, Railroad Square and Lafayette Street are all readily accessible from the trail.

“This bridge is unique in a number of ways and fast becoming a landmark for our community,” said City Commissioner Gil Ziffer, Chair of the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency. “This segment of the larger Capital Cascades Trail provides a new, vital connection from Cascades Park to FAMU Way and Gaines Street linking our community together, which is the most impressive feature of all.”

The attention to detail throughout the entire project is impressive--the paint applied on the bridge uses nano technology, which helps to clean the air. Though a pedestrian facility, the bridge was built to accommodate the weight of an ambulance and the support walls were designed to mirror the limestone walls at Cascades Park, near the old Centennial Field.

“This bridge is an investment in the area, and will spark economic opportunity for established and new businesses alike. It is a key link of the Capital Cascades Trail that will stretch from Franklin Boulevard to the St. Marks Trail,” said Leon County Commissioner Mary Ann Lindley, Vice Chair of the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency.

Tallahassee-based FIGG Engineering designed the bridge to have many unique features. The white canopy is a modern interpretation of local canopy roads and is fitted with solar panels with an Estimated Annual Production of 6,500 kWh. (Visit the interactive solar map on Talgov.com and check out the production of electricity.) An array of LED lights provides a beautiful display and will be used to celebrate special occasions, FAMU and FSU, and can be coordinated with the lights at Cascades Park and Lake Anita.

Included in the celebration will be a one-mile fun run organized by the Tallahassee Marathon that will take runners through Cascades Park and across the bridge, finishing at Lake Anita. The first 150 registrants will receive a commemorative medal, so be one of the first to enjoy this wonderful addition to our community, register for the run at:  Capital Cascades Crossing Marathon Mile.
