At Annual Retreat, Leon County Updates Five-Year Strategic Plan and

Discusses Leon CARES Community Impact

At today’s annual retreat, the Board of County Commissioners reviewed and updated the County’s five-year strategic plan with the addition of 17 new or amended strategic initiatives that direct and align organizational action to advance the County’s strategic priorities in the areas of Economy, Environment, Quality of Life and Governance.

“I am very proud of the way the Commission continues to work together to review and update the County’s Strategic Plan,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Rick Minor. “During these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever to seek collaborative solutions to achieve the County’s goals and engage citizens on the issues that matter most to them.”

As part of the day, the Board received a community impact report on the Leon CARES program. To date, Leon CARES is the largest aid program in the County's history with over $62 million in federal funds to individuals and small businesses most impacted by the virus. The Report provided a detailed overview of all the Leon CARES partnerships and direct assistance programs established since July to provide critical public health services, support services and financial assistance to those impacted most by the COVID-19 virus. Highlighted were the community-wide impacts of the Leon CARES expenditure plan in addressing the needs of thousands of individuals, businesses and nonprofits throughout Leon County.

“Even as we continue to remain focused on responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, updates to the County’s Strategic Plan ensure that the Board’s top priorities align with the optimized resources of our organization and positions our community for continued success,” said County Administrator, Vincent S. Long. “Through Leon CARES and the collaboration of local, state and federal partners, individuals and businesses in our community have been able to receive critical emergency funding through the County’s largest ever emergency aid program to date.”

As part of the update, Leon County reviewed its progress towards reaching bold goals and five-year targets, highlighting the successes in surpassing the goal of committing to upgrade or eliminate 500 septic tank systems, securing nearly $100 million in Veterans Affairs benefits for Leon County veterans and implementing 440 new citizen ideas, improvements, solutions or opportunities.
